and this is why I take photos
I’ve been taking photos since the age of 17.
I’m not talking about my Tumblr-style (90’s kid here!) digi cam selfies, but about the photos I took on vacations. Until I booked my first nude photoshoot with a photographer in Bali.

But now, back to that photoshoot in Bali:
We met at a deserted beach with no one in sight. What I wanted? Some nice shots to gift my back-then partner. What I got? So much more than that!
I felt a bit awkward opening the folder of photos I received back from the photographer. I expected to feel embarrassed of my body, ashamed of my boobs and too critical of my cellulite. But that wasn’t what I felt when I saw the result of our shoot.
For the first time in my life, did I see myself from the perspective of not my own mirror for once, but that of another person. And darn, did I like what I saw! To this day, I hold these photos dear to my heart because they completely changed how I felt in my body.
Instead of wanting plastic surgery, I was suddenly content.
Instead of cellulite, I saw how defined my quads were.
Instead of criticising my chest and belly, I realised how well proportioned they actually were.
Instead of feeling insecure, I could finally see myself.
Capturing authenticity in a world that’s chasing perfection.
I was absolutely blown away by what my photographer achieved with her work. It was then that I learnt that taking photos is not just pressing a button on a camera.
It’s understanding, seeing and feeling.
It’s enhancing the beauty that already exists.
That photoshoot was so empowering for me, that it has - unknowingly to me at that time - shaped the way I photograph. Most importantly though, it has become the sole reason I photograph at all.
